This cake is for a retired botanist on his 90th birthday. I’ve never met him, but his wife told me all about him. And I just had to make him a cake.

I held her stories close—the decades he spent in Southern California, his recent battles with cancer—as I created this gift with buttercream.

Making things for people is nerve-jangling and wonderful.
