Can you guess what our conservators have been working on? Here are some clues: 🌴☔🧥
Swipe for the reveal, and to see the amazing before and after 👉
Our organic material conservators have been painstakingly preparing objects for our upcoming #ChinasHiddenCentury exhibition.
One of the most challenging was this rain cape, made from the leaves of the Chinese windmill palm, arranged in densely overlapping rows like a thatched roof.
This type of cape would likely have been worn by rickshaw pullers, street cleaners or labourers, often with a wide brimmed hat to protect themselves from the rain. Everyday work wear like this is rare survival and provides an important glimpse into how ordinary people lived.
✨ Visit our blog to hear how the conservators make the magic happen and work with incredibly delicate objects – link in bio.
🎫 There’s just one day left to save at least 10% on your tickets to #ChinasHiddenCentury! To see this cape on display alongside other objects cared for by our conservators – from a pearl encrusted snuff bottle to a dried shark’s fin – head to the link in our bio to book your tickets.
🔎 Waterproofs for a worker. Chinese windmill palm, China, 1800–60.
