Video by @Joel Sartore | Helmeted hornbills are glorious birds—and coveted in the illegal wildlife trade for their solid casques, or helmets. Softer than ivory, they can be carved into beads and statuary. As if sensing the threat, these birds fiercely protect their young: The male helps seal the female inside the cavity of a tree for months, bringing food to her and the chick through a tiny slit. When it’s time for the young to fledge, the hornbills chisel away the seal. A logger who’d heard the birds squawking inside a tree that was cut down brought them to Malaysia’s @penangbirdpark. These hornbills were lucky. Deforestation is a major threat to this species’ survival, and in most cases, birds still sealed inside a tree would die. But this man knew how rare they were and brought them to the bird park. It’s not easy to keep these birds alive when their habitat has disappeared.
