The Gila Wilderness, the first ever designated wilderness area in the United States, encompasses 870 square miles (2,250 sq km) of desert, grasslands, pinyon and pine forests, 10,000-foot (3,000m) mountain ranges, and walls of red canyons lining the Gila River—the largest still undammed river in the American West. This past November, I began working on a @ナショナルジオグラフィック story about the Gila Wilderness and the people who call this land home.
