An ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) machine pumps and oxygenates a patient's blood outside the body—which essentially does the job of the lungs externally, in order to give the body a chance to rest and recover. Royal Papworth is one of only five hospitals in England to provide ECMO machines for respiratory failure. One year and over 112,000 deaths into the coronavirus pandemic, the United Kingdom has one of the highest COVID-19 death tolls per one million population in the world.
