Photo by @laurakmorton / Seagulls and pigeons are known to gather in this corner of San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf neighborhood, a popular spot for tourists to sit and eat takeout from the nearby seafood stands. The birds are notorious for trying to snatch food from unsuspecting tourists. Despite warnings not to feed the birds, many tourists throw them scraps. With fewer tourists due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the birds have become more aggressive with each other, fighting for the scarcer crumbs left behind. Supported by @InsideNatGeo’s Emergency Fund for Journalists, I am currently working on a project on Fisherman’s Wharf, documenting the economic issues created by the COVID-19 pandemic that affect communities relying on tourism around the globe. For more from this story and photographs of people, places and culture follow along @laurakmorton.
