Today we’re sharing the story of Harriet Powers. Born in 1837 in Athens, Georgia, Powers was known for her “story quilts,” where she weaved in biblical stories and local legends. - In her two surviving works, Powers implemented piecework and appliqué techniques. Powers initially sold her “Bible Quilt” to a local artist around 1890. The quilt included well-known stories from the Bible, including imagery of Adam and Eve and the Last Supper. Later in the decade, Atlanta University faculty members commissioned Powers to create her second surviving piece, the “Pictorial Quilt.” In addition to incorporating religious references, the quilt also included celestial details, like the sun and the stars.
