People express their love for history in different ways. John Varden collected hair.

Varden created this framed collection of locks of presidential hair in the 1850s. It includes locks from the first 14 U.S. presidents—from George Washington to Franklin Pierce.

Varden began to assemble his collection in the 1850s. (Although he was working at the time as keeper of collections for the National Institute for the Promotion of Science at the U.S. Patent Office, he considered the hair collection to be his personal property). Originally, Varden displayed his collection in a different frame, where locks from U.S. Presidents were shown alongside, in his words, other "Persons of Distinction" from history. (Some of the other figures Varden collected from: inventor Samuel F. B. Morse, sculptor Clark Mills, and Generals Winfield Scott and Sam Houston). The original display also included a public appeal for future donations: “Those having hair of Distinguished Persons, will confere [sic] a Favor by adding to this Collection."

Varden eventually donated his collection of hair to the national historical collection (which was then a part of the Patent Office). In the late 1800s, the national collection became part of the Smithsonian Institution.

PS: Curious about the stain marks on the framed collection? Our experts think those stains come from the adhesive used to affix the locks of hair to the display.
