Today in 1978, Native American activists begin the first Longest Walk—a nearly 3,000-mile march from San Francisco to Washington D.C. This poster is one of many that was created as part of the march.

Marchers began their journey across the United States with a ceremony on Alcatraz Island. The goal of the march was to bring public attention to the many issues facing Native peoples and to oppose several pieces of proposed federal legislation that threatened treaties between the U.S. government and several Native tribes.

The Longest Walk reached Washington, D.C. in July. In the weeks that followed, the marchers convened a number of rallies and other protests in the city. The marchers' supporters included a number of musicians, comedians, athletes, and other entertainers. Many of them participated in a benefit concert held at the D.C. Armory on July 23, 1978. In addition to musical performances by Buffy Sainte-Marie, Richard Havens, Floyd Westerman, the night's entertainment included a 10-round "benefit bout" with Muhammad Ali. Before he sparred before a crowd of 4,000 spectators, Ali told a local reporter that he was "appearing for the Indians because he wanted to help people whose land was taken illegally." (Swipe to see posters advertising for the benefit concert).

Since 1978, Native activists have organized four more Long Walk marches, spotlighting a diverse range issues. Today, one of the most pressing issues for Native peoples is the COVID-19 pandemic, which has had a disproportionate impact on Native communities in the United States. This afternoon (02/11) at 2pm ET, @smithsoniannmai is convening a free virtual webinar focused on how people are combating the COVID-19 pandemic in Native communities.
