Before the International Sweethearts of Rhythm were known worldwide as the first racially integrated all-female jazz band—and posed for promotional photos like the one above—they were a touring school band.

The story of the International Sweethearts of Rhythm began at the Piney Woods Country Life School in Mississippi. Formed in 1937, the band—including students as young as 14—toured across the state, performing at fairs, dance halls, churches, and theaters to raise money for their school. In 1939, the band began to tour outside of Mississippi, making stops and playing music across the United States. One early news article praised the International Sweethearts of Rhythm as "[p]robably the only inter-racial band in America, composed only of girls." (Swipe above to take a look at the article and get a glimpse of the band's members when they were still in school).

In 1941, the International Sweethearts of Rhythm broke ties with their school. (Shortly after, one of the band’s concerts was interrupted and the band leader arrested for “theft of instruments,” but their trouble with the law did not last for long, and the band resumed touring the country). The band traveled across the country in a bus, complete with beds, a kitchenette, bathroom, and dressing room. The bus ensured that the racially integrated group always had accommodations during a time when Jim Crow laws may have barred them from staying in the same hotel. In 1945, the International Sweethearts of Rhythm traveled internationally, performing with the USO for American soldiers.

The International Sweethearts of Rhythm dissolved in 1949, but today their papers, including these snapshots and clippings, are part of our Archives Center's collections.
