I’m usually found in the Cape Breton Highlands practicing my wilderness skills and capturing my adventures along the way. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Being a woodsman & photographer I’ve always had a passion for the outdoors. With spending so much time in the backcountry, I’ve learned many skills like primitive fire making, how to filter and purify water, plant identification, shelter building, etc. One thing that really sparked my interest in learning these skills are the practices of the Mi’kmaq in using the land of Unama'ki (Cape Breton Island). So I was intrigued to learn about certain types of local trees and plants that are used to make things like baskets and tools, using birchbark for dozens of uses, what woods to use for friction fires, learning what’s edible and what’s not and which plants can be used to treat wounds or illness. Learning skills like this gives you such a different, deeper respect and appreciation. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Hiking through all these beautiful locations, I quickly found myself capturing photos of the landscapes and my wilderness skills in hopes to help inspire more people to get outdoors!⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ This past year with all the travel restrictions in place, I had the perfect chance to get out and explore all those backcountry trails, camping sites and hidden gems that have been on my list for so long.
