💡 Au milieu d'une grande place a lieu la purge de Mercure : le dieu est entouré d'une foule d'hommes masqués, caricaturés ou nus. Diverses interprétations du sujet ont été données, mais le sens exact de la scène reste mystérieux.

👀 Selon l’une d’entre elles, Perruzi aurait choisi Mercure car ce dieu de la ruse et de la tromperie, porte le même nom que le métal dont se servaient les alchimistes pour obtenir l'or. Vasari déjà y voyait une satire contre les alchimistes.

🏛️ Certains bâtiments représentés sont identifiables. De gauche à droite, nous apercevons l'arc de Constantin, le Colisée, le Neptune (colosse néronien), la tour des Vents, la colonne de Trajan, deux obélisques, le théâtre, le "Tempietto" de Bramante et un temple dédié à Vesta.

💡 The purging of Mercury is shown taking place in the center of a large city square. The classical god is surrounded by a crowd of masked men, some naked and some highly caricaturized. Various interpretations of the drawing's subject-matter have been put forward, but the scene's exact meaning remains a mystery.

👀 According to one of them, Mercury, the god of cunning tricks and deception, has been chosen because he bears the same name as the metal from which alchemists tried to extract gold. Vasari saw it as a satire directed against alchemists.

🏛️ Some of the buildings enclosing the square are easily identifiable. From left to right, we can see the Arch of Constantine, the Coliseum, Nero's colossal figure of Neptune, the Tower of the Winds, Trajan's Column, two obelisks, a theater, Bramante's "Tempietto", and a temple dedicated to Vesta, the Roman goddess of the hearth.
