Aujourd’hui, penchons-nous sur cette sculpture de Philopoemen. 🔎 - ✍️ En 222 avant notre ère, Philopoemen participe à la bataille de Sélasie, contre Sparte. Blessé, il extrait stoïquement le javelot qui s'était brisé dans sa cuisse. L'épisode est raconté par l'auteur grec Plutarque qui établit des parallèles entre des grecs et des romains célèbres. - 🗡 David d'Angers sculpte son héros nu, comme dans la statuaire antique. Il conserve cependant quelques attributs du guerrier : casque à cimier, baudrier, épée... Les proportions monumentales (la statue fait plus de 2m de hauteur) font de Philopoemen un colosse. - 👀 Le sculpteur a tenté de concilier la nature physique et l'être moral. Vue du côté droit, celui de blessure, la statue présente l'homme. Vue de l'autre côté, c'est un héros plein de fierté. When wounded, Philopoemen stoically removed the javelin that had broken in his thigh. The episode is related by the Greek author Plutarch who draws parallels between famous Greeks and Romans. - 🗡 David d'Angers carved a nude figure of his hero, as in antique statuary. He retained a number of the warrior's attributes: crested helmet, baldric, and sword. The monumental proportions (the marble is 2 meters high) transform Philopoemen into a colossus. - 👀 The sculptor strove to reconcile physical nature with a moral essence. Seen from the right-hand side, the side with the wound, the statue depicts the man suffering. Seen from the other side, the statue represents a hero full of pride.
