ナショナルジオグラフィックさんのインスタグラム写真 - (ナショナルジオグラフィックInstagram)「Photo by @michaelchristopherbrown / While working and living in Cuba from 2014 to 2016, in Havana I would, almost daily, walk along the Malecón, the esplanade stretching for eight kilometers (five miles) along the northern coast. The Malecón was a gathering place for Cubans of all ages but especially the youth and especially at night. Often hundreds of youth would gather, and there was generally a romantic, magical feeling to the atmosphere and location, architecturally unique among Caribbean cities. Ninety miles north of this seawall is Miami, and the group of youth I had befriended would tell stories of friends and family who had left for, tried to leave for, or were turned back from the United States. There was often then an explanation of the reasons for leaving, such as the great economic opportunities. But this was often then followed by a caveat that, despite the negative aspects of Cuban society, ultimately many of them did not want to leave the country they loved. As most of the young Cubans I met were among the warmest, friendliest, liveliest, and most generous people I ever met, I could see why.
