And yet that possibility is becoming ever more real: on the African continent, seven of the 11 vulture species are now being pushed to the edge of extinction, with declines of between 80 and 90 percent over the past 50 years. The causes behind these collapsing populations are varied, but poisoning has emerged as perhaps the most serious threat—and 2020 saw a spate of devastating poisoning incidents.
