The tenth largest lake island in the world, Idjwi is located in Lake Kivu, one of the African Great Lakes, which lies between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (D.R.C.) and Rwanda. Traveling between the D.R.C. cities of Goma and Bukavu, I crossed the lake many times in boats ranging from modern ferries to pirogues and handmade dugout canoes carved from a single tree trunk. In general, the less efficient the craft the cheaper the price, though the less expensive trips often make for the best adventures.
