Where do you draw inspiration from?
John Constable painted this view over the ocean on a family trip to Brighton around New Year in 1826. It’s one of his only oil sketches completed outdoors in winter. On an earlier visit to Brighton, the landscape painter had admired ‘the magnificence of the sea’. He later wrote how seabirds – some of which are included here – ‘add to the wildness and to the sentiment of melancholy always attendant on the ocean’.
