In Nancy Carline's family portrait, the artist shows herself in the background with her future husband, painter Richard Carline, seated between his mother Anne and sister Hilda in the garden of their family home in Hampstead.
Their mother Anne had died the year before, but her portrait was added to the group by the artist as her strong character was still felt at the family's home. The picture therefore becomes a memorial to Anne and a celebration of the family of which she was the head.
Sending love to all families who have lost a loved one this year. 💛
