In the wild, white-lipped peccaries are found in herds of up to 300 individuals. Finding safety in numbers, it is essential that each peccary have ways to stay connected to other members of the group, as separation could lead to a peccary becoming easy prey for predators like jaguars. A scent gland on the peccary’s back emits a scent that creates a strong bond between members of the herd. Moans, grunts, barks, and teeth chattering are all forms of communication that also work to keep the herd connected.
