村上隆さんのインスタグラム写真 - (村上隆Instagram)「Here’s what to look for in Yuji Ueda’s @yuji____ueda exhibition of new works. Ueda’s ceramic works with glazes seemingly bursting through their surfaces, along with his new abstract, somewhat Kazuo Shiraga-esque paintings evoking Fauvism, constitute his new move. His work seems to embody his immersive interest in holes and fissures, predilections for and affinity with bursting forms. They harmonize the expressions of his physical movements and colors. My description may not make any sense at all but that’s the only way to describe them. If you ask me what part of that is art and can be judged as merits or demerits of his work, I’ll have to leave that to the connoisseurs’ context analyses. As far as artists go, in addition to aforementioned Kazuo Shiraga, it could be helpful to try and understand Ueda's work in the context of sculptural paintings of Lucio Fontana and Anish Kapoor. Japanese ceramics has a wide-ranging fans globally and its market is broad, with ample choices in terms of price points as well. As such, the only way a ceramic artist and their work can be properly and critically evaluated is through the test of time, based on whether they are historically recognized in the world of ceramics. In the past 30 years, the more affordable segment has been thriving in the Japanese ceramics world, while the high-end works have diminished. As a result, artistic experimentations have regressed and, as such, no one seems capable of contemplating ceramic works relative to contemporary art. In that sense, Ueda is audaciously on his own, beating his own solitary path and leveling the ground. I wrote in my previous post about the increasing number of ceramicists who imitate his work, but I suspect we’ll start to see paintings that look similar to his popping up in the near future. When that happens, I hope you'll remember the lofty will of the original artist, Yuji Ueda. His merit, backed by his talent and the extraordinary sense of scale, is authentic. photo: @chiaki_kasahara_ translation: @tabi_the_fat」12月6日 16時43分 - takashipom
