Little rain falls, and, in places, none at all. We could wander over the rise until our vehicle is out of sight. Until all we can see is dust, salt, rock, all wiped clean by the barrelling wind. We know there’s life here — lichens, leathery spines, woody stems — and, somewhere, out of sight, breathing creatures too. Squeezed under rocks or motionless against the sand, their living tissues sealed up tight in armour and scales. Birds, at least, are plentiful. They stand stilt-legged on shining planes of brine.
