Some objects we keep, whilst others we give away; some we use and some we treasure; some accumulate meaning, whilst others diminish in our eyes over time. ‘Lucie Rie and Hans Coper: Exceptional Ceramics’ is made up of the things that two of the twentieth century’s most important potters decided to keep; a selection of pieces that felt significant, personal, beautiful – that most embody the maker’s style and sensibilities.
The work of Lucie Rie (1902-95) and Hans Coper (1920-81) has been shown together in many exhibitions, over many decades – the result of their close friendship and aesthetic kinship.
Pieces from both artists are now on view at @phillipsauction in London - the most significant group of works by Lucie Rie and Hans Coper ever to come to auction.
