National Geographic Creativeさんのインスタグラム写真 - (National Geographic CreativeInstagram)「Photo by @nataliekeyssar / Luz Rodriguez poses for a portrait in a street studio I set up outside a food distribution event at CENTI, a local church in Queens that passes out around 500 boxes of groceries to those in need every week. Rather than focusing on the winding lines of those waiting for food in the wake of the pandemic, I wanted to create a space to connect with the people I was photographing, and hear more about their situations. Those who wanted to could come over for a portrait and an interview during the hours they spent waiting for food. Luz is currently out of work and so is her whole family. She lives with her mother, her children and her brother. She says she’s very grateful for all the help she’s received in the midst of such a difficult situation. She worked for an 87-year-old man, taking care of him for the last 15 years. He got COVID-19 and died two weeks later, and since then she’s been without work. Queens was was hit very hard by the first wave of the pandemic in NYC in the spring. The community is largely essential workers, from delivery drivers to cooks, cleaners, and construction workers, many of whom did not have the option to work from home. With population density and many living in tight quarters, infection rates in the area were very high. Tragic losses of life were compounded by the economic fallout, as many lost their jobs or had their incomes cut, and a continued high cost of living in the city. Now Queens is wrestling with rampant food insecurity. Families struggling to make ends meet are finding innovative ways to participate in the informal economy and depending on food donations to get by, and churches, government programs, and community organizations are mobilizing to help in every way they can.
