These days, it’s easier to feel like you’re talking *at* someone rather than *with* someone — especially on social media. But instead of logging off altogether, what if we could have *better* conversations with the people we disagree with? Turns out, there is a way, says Megan Phelps-Roper (@meganmarie) who grew up as part of the controversial Westboro Baptist Church. In fact, it was conversations with strangers on Twitter that led to her decision to leave. She’s using the lessons she learned in that process to help the rest of us engage in more productive and respectful conversations — whether virtual or face-to-face. “We've broken the world into 'us' and 'them', only emerging from our bunkers long enough to lob rhetorical grenades at the other camp,” she says. “This path has brought us cruel, sniping, deepening polarization, and even outbreaks of violence.
