An undercurrent of the show is the immense possibility within materials and how heat and time make room for unanticipated beauty." —Theaster Gates "Black Vessel," Theaster Gates’s first-ever solo exhibition in New York, is on view at Gagosian, 555 West 24th Street, through December 19. In the "Brick Reliquaries" (2020), the known properties of the materials used are transformed into the lesser-known mysteries of heat-based sculpture by firing bricks with a strong manganese content to an excessive 2300°F. In some instances, the material loses its specificity when pushed to such limits; in others, the carbide shelves inside the kiln fuse with the bricks and other sculptural elements that they hold, becoming host to material transformation. In "Black Vessel" (2020), the walls are lined with Roman bricks customized from reconstituted remainders using manganese dioxide and black dye.
