In a century-old apartment in India, design entrepreneur Srila Chatterjee and filmmaker Mahesh Mathai have made a bold, immersive space that keeps dreams alive even in the most challenging times. Twenty-seven years ago, Chatterjee and Mathai walked into the apartment—located in a 1904 Indian Colonial–style building in a historic area of Mumbai—and knew within minutes that it was where they were supposed to be. The space had been shoddily carved up into four separate flats, but Mathai, a filmmaker, and Chatterjee, a film producer-turned interior designer (who owns the lifestyle site @baromarket), were undeterred. Click the link in bio to see how they redesigned the space, as seen in our November 2020 issue. On the terrace, which boasts sweeping views of Mumbai, the table was made from a vintage wood panel engraved with Arabic calligraphy, and the metal chairs are from Jodhpur. A vintage Pichwai textile hangs behind the table, and the mounted vintage mask (left) is from Kerala. Photography by @fabien_charuau.
