“Most of our lives we live closed up in ourselves, with a longing not to be alone, to include others in that life that is invisible and intangible. To make it visible and tangible, we need light and material, any material. And any material can take on the burden of what had been brewing in our consciousness or subconsciousness, in our awareness or in our dreams,” #AnniAlbers wrote in her 1982 essay, “Material as Metaphor.”

Challenging the widespread marginalization of weaving as “women’s work,” in Albers’s lifetime, textiles became newly visible as a creative discipline—one closely interwoven with the practices of architecture, industrial design, drawing, and sculpture.

“Taking a Thread for a Walk,” on view through January 10, 2021, spans ancient textile traditions, early-20th-century design reform movements, and industrial materials and production methods to highlight the fluid expressivity of the medium.
