Across Africa, giraffes are undergoing what is being termed a silent extinction. Current estimates are that giraffe populations across Africa have dropped nearly 40 percent in three decades, plummeting from 150,000 in the 1980s to fewer than 100,000 today. Reticulated giraffe themselves number fewer than 16,000. Scientists are now undertaking major studies to understand why giraffes are disappearing and what can be done to stop it.
