Photo by @kiliiiyuyan / An Indian relay racer in Kalispell, Montana, shoots past in a blurred symphony of color. Indian relay is the sport of bareback horse racing, reinvented by the Blackfeet and quickly gaining popularity among Indigenous peoples across North America. Today is Indigenous Peoples' Day, a time to celebrate the incredible resilience of the world’s first peoples. Today I see a generation of Native youth that has worked hard to decolonize, leading their communities back to revitalized identities and traditional ways of life. We are reclaiming the lands, culture, and traditional knowledge that allowed us to live closely with the natural world for thousands of years. Today is a day to remember the sacrifices of our ancestors, but also a day to give thanks to all the things that support us, and look ahead to the generations that will come after us.
