In October 2019, thousands gathered in the streets here to protest government corruption and the country's sectarian political system. For five consecutive months, Iraqi youth successfully occupied the square, which is both strategic and symbolic to Baghdad. COVID-19 brought the protests to a halt in the spring, with curfews and social distancing, but the impact of the protests continues to ripple through, and in some cases upend, the status quo. "For Iraq, I hope that the parliament dissolves, that there are no more [corrupt] political parties, and that women take their rights.
