Not only do they protect wildlife, they also serve the human communities who live in and around these areas. I’ve personally seen the role rangers play and how they are well trained and equipped to create safe spaces. And it’s in those spaces where beautiful things can happen–wildlife can return, schools can be built, and jobs created. But it’s heartbreaking to see how underfunded and under-resourced many wildlife rangers are–despite the physical and mental toll of being front-line defenders of both wildlife and human life. Adequate resourcing has always been a challenge, but it is especially so now, given the economic downturn across Africa.
