As their name implies, defassa waterbuck inhabit areas close to rivers and lakes south of the Sahara. In addition to providing access to ideal sustenance, this habitat also gives the waterbuck long grasses and watery places which can be used as hiding spots or cover to escape predators. While in the water, this species remains relatively dry thanks to an oily secretion from its sweat glands that acts as a water repellent.
