Today in stories I’m going to dive a little bit into this Sāmoan ‘Art of Respect’, which is the art of traditional Tā Tatau, or hand tapped Tattooing. Tā Tatau has been a part of Sāmoan and Pacific Islander culture for over 3000 years. Tatau is the Polynesian word for applying motifs to the skin, and the english word “tattoo” actually originates from this term. In today’s stories I’ll be covering a little bit about the story of how our ancestors began Tā Tatau, what it means culturally for our communities, the significance behind some of the motifs, and how it has globalized and changed in modern times - moving into Tattoo conventions and Pasifika festivals, and beyond the skin and into the Pasifika art world.
