Photo by @Joel Sartore / These four young Sumatran tiger cubs are quadruplets that were born @tierparkberlin. In the wild, these tigers are faced with two major threats: habitat loss due to palm oil production, and illegal snare poaching linked to the use of tiger body parts in traditional Asian medicine. Sumatran tiger numbers have been decreasing dramatically over the last several decades, and experts estimate that less than 400 tigers remain in the wild. Tierpark Berlin has been committed to species conservation for many years now, and is responsible for the births of 118 Sumatran tigers over the past 60 years. It works with regional and global conservation breeding programs and zoos worldwide; the goal is to establish an ex-situ population as one component of the overall strategy to save the critically endangered Sumatran tiger.
