In this 2003 work, self-trained artist #ThorntonDial—born #OnThisDay in 1928 ​in Emelle, Alabama—envisions the moment the universe was created, inspired by a line from the Book of Genesis: "And God said, Let there be light: and there was light."

Composed with repurposed, cast-off materials, Dial's sculptural painting evokes shards of black nothingness, purple sky, and blue-green earth, which appear to collide ferociously with one another, animated by divine command.
