In the wake of the Beirut blast of August 4, Lebanese artists @akramzaatari, Yasmine Eid-Sabbagh, and Rachel Tabet (@tabetrachel) discuss their city and the future of the @arabimagefoundation with @clement_cheroux.

“Through my art practice,” Zaatari explains, “I was interested in the impossibility of giving justice to the experience of ‘witnessing’ explosions through simple photographic captures. Photographs always fell short in reproducing such an experience, fell short in reproducing the accelerated heartbeat and adrenaline rush that accompanies massive explosions!”

Born in Saida, southern Lebanon, in 1966, Zaatari is part of a generation of artists whose childhood and adolescence were indelibly marked by the Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990).

Shot in Lebanon, Syria and Jordan, Zaatari's “This Day” (2003) uses photographs and videos to examine the production and circulation of images in the Middle East through a permanent tension between history and memory.
