In the 1930s, Elsa Schiaparelli’s collaborations with artists changed the face of fashion. This evening dress adorned with an oversize printed lobster was among her many collaborative projects with Salvador Dalí, who in 1934 had begun employing this shellfish as a motif in his work. Like many of Schiaparelli’s designs from the late 1920s through the 1930s, the gown combines the aesthetics of modernism with the polemics of Surrealism. 🦞
