Happy birthday to photographer and multimedia artist Lorna Simpson. Her works on paper often link words and images together to explore issues faced by Black women in a world ingrained with structural racism and sexism. The rich, saturated tones of this print come from a process known as photogravure, developed in the 19th century, in which photographic negatives are transferred to a metal printing plate and etched. Simpson's use of this medium further suggests a connection to history.
