On a hazy hot summer day in New York we're sharing #MarcChagall’s vibrant work on paper, a study for a backdrop in the ballet “Aleko.”
#Chagall created dozens of backdrops and costumes for the production—his first experience making theatrical designs for the ballet. “Chagall’s decorations are burning like the sun in heaven,” the artist’s wife, Bella, wrote in a letter shortly after the premiere in September 1942. “And the whole ballet . . . spurts with light and joy.”
