Becket’s assassination in 1170 changed the course of European history, and pilgrims from across the continent continued to visit his shrine in Canterbury until 1538, when King Henry VIII would label him a traitor and order the shrine’s destruction. This casket made around 1200 in France is decorated with scenes of the murder.
