1984– Tomás Munita – Kabul — Leaving the Shadows

For decades, everyday life in Afghanistan has been dominated by war and terror. Fourteen years ago, Chilean photographer Tomás Munita has won the prestigious Leica Oskar Barnack Award with his photo report ‘Kabul — Leaving the Shadows’. The title was fitting for two reasons: it alludes to both the form — the concentration on twilight moods and the content — a description of the living situation of the Afghan population. His series has lost none of its intensity, but also none of its hope.
