1992 – Sebastião Salgado –Kuwait - A desert on fire

During the Second Gulf War in 1991, Brazilian photographer and activist Sebastião Salgado (@sebastiaosalgadoofficial) photographed the ghostly inferno that Iraqi troops had set to the Kuwaiti oil fields at close range. In 1992 he received the Leica Oskar Barnack Award for the black and white series, that has lost none of its shocking gravity to this day.
