#GagosianSpotlight: “I liked a particular sculpture of Giambologna’s, but Bernini is a better example of what I like. He is shocking; he did amazing, unbelievable things.”
—Urs Fischer
Urs Fischer began making candle sculptures in the early 2000s, with a series of crudely rendered female nudes. A series of realistic figurative candle portraits followed, including a full-size replica of Giambologna’s sixteenth-century marble sculpture “The Rape of the Sabine Women.” Last year, Fischer’s newest candle portrait, “Leo (George & Irmelin),” was presented at Gagosian, Paris. Follow the link in our bio to watch a tour of the exhibition, in which journalist and curator Judith Benhamou-Huet discusses Fischer’s candle sculptures.
