Gagosian is pleased to present “Arcimboldo” (2019) by Urs Fischer for $775,000, now available for forty-eight hours only.

In this large-scale panel painting, Fischer superimposes hyperrealistic images of fruits, vegetables, and eggs over a colorized vintage Hollywood headshot, bringing the ubiquitous and banal into whimsical collision with a symbol of idealized, unattainable glamour.

The work is named for the popular sixteenth-century painter who fashioned surreal and elaborate portraits out of fruit, vegetables, and flowers. Fischer’s primary strategy with the modern-day “Arcimboldo” is, however, obfuscation. The work deliberately problematizes the act of looking. Fischer’s scatter of fruit acts as a barrier between subject and beholder and strips away personal identity from the Hollywood star at hand, suggesting that her once-blinding aura of celebrity has faded over time to something more mundane.
