They were looking for ugruk (bearded seal), which normally come around that time of year, but they were unsuccessful. Hunting, fishing, and foraging for food, known as subsistence, is not only crucial as the main food source for Inupiat communities, it is one of the most important aspects of cultural, spiritual, and everyday life.
