Photo by @lucalocatelliphoto | A worker examines the composition of biomass slurry at Kalundborg Bioenergy in Denmark. If there’s a place where the "circular economy" is applied on an industrial scale, it's in Kalundborg. Before that term was even defined, nine companies joined together here in an industrial park with the intention of using waste as a resource and sharing byproducts and energy in a mutually beneficial way.
This slurry comes from the production of insulin—Kalundborg is home to the world’s largest factory of this precious hormone—which generates a huge amount of yeast byproduct. Instead of letting it go to waste, Kalundborg Bioenergy uses it to produce fertilizers for agriculture and ferments it to generate biogas.
This area was one of the subjects I had the chance to cover during my most recent assignment for the magazine, as part of the March cover story "The End of Trash."
