東急線沿線にある寺社仏閣の彫刻をご紹介します。世田谷線宮の坂駅から徒歩5分ほどの「大谿山 豪徳寺」
招き猫発祥の地として有名で、境内にはたくさんの招き猫が奉納されています。
この豪徳寺の招き猫には「江戸時代、彦根藩主井伊直孝が鷹狩りの帰りに付近を通りがかったところ、一匹の白い猫が手招きするのに気付きました。気になった直孝が招かれるようにお寺に入ると、外はたちまち雷雨に！猫のおかげで直孝は濡れずに済んだ」というエピソードがあるそうです。その後直孝はお寺を立派に改築。豪徳寺と改名し、招き猫が祀られるようになったとか。
たくさんの招き猫の姿は圧巻です。

Just a 5 min. walk from Tokyu Setagaya Line Miyanosaka Station will bring you to Gotokuji Temple, a spot made famous for being lined wall to wall with “maneki neko” lucky cat statues inside. These lucky cats are said to have got their start in the Edo period when Ii Naotaka, daimyo of the Hikone Domain, returned from a hunting trip and noticed a white cat waving him down. Naotaka felt beckoned into the temple, and once inside was immediately saved from a sudden storm. Naotaka’s narrow escape was thought to be only by the luck of the cat. Afterwards, he built up the temple to its full grandeur. It was named Gotokuji and the original lucky cat is said to be enshrined here. The sheer number of lucky cats is sure to reel you in!
