It's celebrated as the end of U.S. chattel slavery and our nation's second independence day. The Emancipation Proclamation took effect in 1863, but it only freed those in rebelling states and could not be implemented in places under Confederate control. In the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people waited two more years for freedom. On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston and announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved African Americans in the state were free by executive decree. The newly freed people in Texas called the day "Juneteenth." This booklet in our @nmaahc's collection was produced in December 1862 for Union soldiers to read and distribute among African Americans.
