Maya Lin's "Folding the Chesapeake" (2015) imagines the Chesapeake Bay watershed in marbles. Once installed in our @americanart's #RenwickGallery, Lin wanted the sculpture to have the same freedom of movement as water, and it flows across the floor, up the walls, and even over the vents.
The marbles are the same industrial fiberglass product her father Henry Huan Lin and other glass-blowing pioneers experimented with in the 1960s. Their shape is based on satellite imagery from NASA.
