Matthew Shepard's story is about how a brutal murder changed the world, but it's also the story of a young man who was still becoming himself.
Shepard—a college student in Laramie, Wyoming—was targeted for being gay, robbed and killed in 1998.
This childhood Superman cape is one of the objects his parents donated to our @国立アメリカ歴史博物館. These ordinary objects reflect the different facets of his everyday life, as well as the outpouring of grief and outrage that followed his death. Shepard's parents Judy and Dennis formed the Matthew Shepard Foundation to honor their son’s life and aspirations, and worked to pass federal hate crimes legislation.
